Cambodian food has a bad rep, and quite deserved too for the most part, with cheap refined cooking oil, diabetes inducing sugar levels and liberal doses of that culinary crack- highly addictive crystal monosodium glutamate, MSG- the stuff that makes Chinese takeaway so unsatisfying 30 minutes after consumption.
There are, of course edible soups and a few nice dishes, Khmer and ‘fusion’ alike, amok, for example- the tikka masala of the region and about Cambodian as camembert. BBQ seafood is still BBQ seafood (with a little bit of sugar added for luck), but on the whole most ‘real food’ tastes a lot like those uncomfortable moments when too much warm crappy beer is swilled too quickly and a bit of sick rises up into your mouth.
Apologists will refute such `food racism (foocism??), and I will stand my ground, but one has to adapt to such things or slowly starve to death- after a while even the most reviled dishes can become almost palatable.
The good denizens of the city may argue over semantics and the quality of gravy to decide the BEST Sunday roast in town (does a monthly fare count?),where to source the juiciest burger in BKK1 or the most authentic pizza in the city (deep pan DOES NOT constitute pizza). Adventurous sorts and keerazy backpackers buy bags of fried bugs and prahoc, in a vain effort to convince themselves that they really are delicious and not anything like crunchy sugar oil with indigestible bits/rotten fish.
Cambodian people, are by nature a hungry bunch, and will consume just about anything of any size- often to the detriment of the local wildlife population. I’ve had the (dis)pleasure to experience the following snacks, and whilst I don’t condone animal cruelty (animal rights are low down on the scale of the Cambodian give-a-crap-o-meter) some of the following tidbits may cause some offence.

It’s a well established fact that Asians eat dog, but then again so do some Swiss. Without dwelling too much on the ethics, choice Vietnamese specialty dining establishments and even some upmarket Korean restaurants openly tout mutt on the menu. Like it or lump it, but it’s going nowhere and those who feel strongly on the taboo topic may have their opinions changed by a never ending barrage of sleepless nighttime howling, yapping and other ‘kikilu’ noises which go on from dusk till dawn.
Things always taste better in the countryside don’t they? Not always. Some may remember the unfortunate case of the dog in Siem Reap story, bludgeoned to death in front of my eyes. That wasn’t the tenderest of main courses I’ve been served, but was prime Aberdeen Angus steak compared to what was dished out in Kampong Shitesville recently.
Our mate Bong Lim is a decent enough chap, although mostly pissed out of his face by 8am and if given a night’s notice, will come and help out with building work, maintenance and butchery skills. Best of all, he’s happy to be paid in Riel, wine, beer and diseased poultry.
I was informed Bong Lim had killed a dog and I could go and drink wine at his place. Outside his shack sat some local ‘gangsters’ (unemployed youths with tattoos and daft hairstyles rather than Al Capone or Ronnie Kray) supping palm wine and juice, waiting for a free dinner.
For an old drunk, the seeds of Lim’s loin have been fruitful, and behind a line of gawking kids, his wife and eldest daughter were stirring a pot. Sneaking a peak, I saw a bubbling curry and a dog skull grinning with empty eye sockets. Thinking it prudent not to ask questions, I waited and shared a glass of bitter palm wine from the communal cup and turned my thoughts to hepatitis and herpes.
The curry was soon ready, and I took a piece of gristle and tried to chew, spat it out discreetly and tried another. Words cannot explain how foul both flavor and texture were (although the sauce wasn’t bad). There was a bit of laughter, before I was told the dog was ‘dop pbee chnam’. 12 year old mutt, and my thoughts turned to other, more mysterious diseases. I felt a twinge of sympathy for poor Lim (and a little for his faithful companion of over a decade), as the village boys laughed and took the piss ‘Dop bpee!’ Unlike the others, I barely touched my helping and waved away offers of seconds.

CAMBODIAN STREET FOOD : CHILLI COCKLES

It’s not often I post about things we haven’t actually eaten, in fact never – But, I was pretty surprised by the cockle sellers in Cambodia, for a couple of reasons.



On the one hand, I’m quite amazed that anyone thought that pushing trays of shellfish around in the midday sun was a good idea; and then on the other I’m surprised that small cities like Battambang can sustain so many people trading the same product.
I’m usually fairly fast and loose with my digestive health, an adventurous spirit, a street food gambler – although Pani puri proved to be a step too far –  I love cockles, but I just couldn’t justify buying unrefrigerated shellfish in the middle of the hottest time of year.
If anybody managed to enjoy these without gastrointestinal adventures, I would greatly like to know more.
