Green papaya salad is a spicy salad made from shredded unripe papaya. It is of Lao origin but it is also eaten throughout Southeast Asia. Locally known in Cambodia as bok l'hong (Khmer: បុកល្ហុង, pronounced [ɓok lhoŋ]), in Laos as tam som (Lao: ຕໍາສົ້ມ) or the more specific name tam maak hoong (Lao: ຕໍາໝາກຫຸ່ງ, Lao pronunciation: [tàm.ma᷆ːk.hūŋ]), in Thailand as som tam (Thai: ส้มตำ, pronounced [sôm tam]), and in Vietnam as goi du du. Som tam, the Thai variation, was listed at number 46 on World's 50 most delicious foods compiled by CNN Go in 2011.

Provincial Protein – A Guide to Subsistence Dining
Cambodian food has a bad rep, and quite deserved too for the most part, with cheap refined cooking oil, diabetes inducing sugar levels and liberal doses of that culinary crack- highly addictive crystal monosodium glutamate, MSG- the stuff that makes Chinese takeaway so unsatisfying 30 minutes after consumption.
There are, of course edible soups and a few nice dishes, Khmer and ‘fusion’ alike, amok, for example- the tikka masala of the region and about Cambodian as camembert. BBQ seafood is still BBQ seafood (with a little bit of sugar added for luck), but on the whole most ‘real food’ tastes a lot like those uncomfortable moments when too much warm crappy beer is swilled too quickly and a bit of sick rises up into your mouth.
Apologists will refute such `food racism (foocism??), and I will stand my ground, but one has to adapt to such things or slowly starve to death- after a while even the most reviled dishes can become almost palatable.
The good denizens of the city may argue over semantics and the quality of gravy to decide the BEST Sunday roast in town (does a monthly fare count?),where to source the juiciest burger in BKK1 or the most authentic pizza in the city (deep pan DOES NOT constitute pizza). Adventurous sorts and keerazy backpackers buy bags of fried bugs and prahoc, in a vain effort to convince themselves that they really are delicious and not anything like crunchy sugar oil with indigestible bits/rotten fish.
Cambodian people, are by nature a hungry bunch, and will consume just about anything of any size- often to the detriment of the local wildlife population. I’ve had the (dis)pleasure to experience the following snacks, and whilst I don’t condone animal cruelty (animal rights are low down on the scale of the Cambodian give-a-crap-o-meter) some of the following tidbits may cause some offence.

It’s a well established fact that Asians eat dog, but then again so do some Swiss. Without dwelling too much on the ethics, choice Vietnamese specialty dining establishments and even some upmarket Korean restaurants openly tout mutt on the menu. Like it or lump it, but it’s going nowhere and those who feel strongly on the taboo topic may have their opinions changed by a never ending barrage of sleepless nighttime howling, yapping and other ‘kikilu’ noises which go on from dusk till dawn.
Things always taste better in the countryside don’t they? Not always. Some may remember the unfortunate case of the dog in Siem Reap story, bludgeoned to death in front of my eyes. That wasn’t the tenderest of main courses I’ve been served, but was prime Aberdeen Angus steak compared to what was dished out in Kampong Shitesville recently.
Our mate Bong Lim is a decent enough chap, although mostly pissed out of his face by 8am and if given a night’s notice, will come and help out with building work, maintenance and butchery skills. Best of all, he’s happy to be paid in Riel, wine, beer and diseased poultry.
I was informed Bong Lim had killed a dog and I could go and drink wine at his place. Outside his shack sat some local ‘gangsters’ (unemployed youths with tattoos and daft hairstyles rather than Al Capone or Ronnie Kray) supping palm wine and juice, waiting for a free dinner.
For an old drunk, the seeds of Lim’s loin have been fruitful, and behind a line of gawking kids, his wife and eldest daughter were stirring a pot. Sneaking a peak, I saw a bubbling curry and a dog skull grinning with empty eye sockets. Thinking it prudent not to ask questions, I waited and shared a glass of bitter palm wine from the communal cup and turned my thoughts to hepatitis and herpes.
The curry was soon ready, and I took a piece of gristle and tried to chew, spat it out discreetly and tried another. Words cannot explain how foul both flavor and texture were (although the sauce wasn’t bad). There was a bit of laughter, before I was told the dog was ‘dop pbee chnam’. 12 year old mutt, and my thoughts turned to other, more mysterious diseases. I felt a twinge of sympathy for poor Lim (and a little for his faithful companion of over a decade), as the village boys laughed and took the piss ‘Dop bpee!’ Unlike the others, I barely touched my helping and waved away offers of seconds.
CAMBODIAN STREET FOOD : CHILLI COCKLES
It’s not often I post about things we haven’t actually eaten, in fact never – But, I was pretty surprised by the cockle sellers in Cambodia, for a couple of reasons.
On the one hand, I’m quite amazed that anyone thought that pushing trays of shellfish around in the midday sun was a good idea; and then on the other I’m surprised that small cities like Battambang can sustain so many people trading the same product.
I’m usually fairly fast and loose with my digestive health, an adventurous spirit, a street food gambler – although Pani puri proved to be a step too far – I love cockles, but I just couldn’t justify buying unrefrigerated shellfish in the middle of the hottest time of year.
If anybody managed to enjoy these without gastrointestinal adventures, I would greatly like to know more.

I Help My Adopted Marsupials Feel Safe By Crocheting Them Tiny Buddies
It all started with a pair of orphaned sugar glider joeys. They were tiny and scared with their eyes just starting to open. In the wild, they would spend this delicate and dangerous time huddled in their nest or clinging to their parents’ backs. The family bond is very strong for these beautiful creatures. They are primarily driven by the need for tactile interaction and familiar scents. A glider without a friend is a lonely glider.
Since this pair was being hand raised, they needed a surrogate mother to help them feel safe. I just happen to be into amigurumi (the Japanese art of knitting or crocheting small dolls) and decided to adapt my patterns for gliders. The joeys took to their little octopus instantly. They would latch onto the round dome of its head or snuggle up underneath it to sleep. As they grew older, they would wrestle and play with their octopus.

Chapy The Cat Attended His First International Cat Show
Chapy, a japanese bobtail cat, recently took part in the 28th and 29th International Cat Show by FIFE that took place in Greece. It was the first cat show for the beautiful blue-eyed cat that is only one year old. However, Chapy managed to win two trophies during the show as Best Cat In Show for the the first and the second day.
Chapy has thousands of fans on his social media such as Facebook and Twitter but this was the first time he appeared on TV. Here are some photos from the show and how Chapy managed to charm the crowd and the judges!

I Rescued A Husky And Later He Saved Me From An Abusive Relationship
I found Kyro through an ad on Craigslist. His Mother had abandoned Kyro and his 9 siblings. The owner sent out a plea online for assistance in raising the puppies. I gladly volunteered and helped to bottle feed, raise and find the puppies homes. Kyro ended up coming home with me because I couldn’t resist his chunky puppy belly!
When I adopted Kyro I was trapped in an abusive relationship, in which I had lost all hope of escaping. Kyro became my excuse to go on adventures and escape the situation. Ultimately, I left my ex due to him beginning to target Kyro with his rage. Kyro was and is my world – I couldn’t bare to see anything happen to him. After several months of us being out of the situation and adventuring around – I found a deep passion for photography. Capturing our travels together became my inspiration and gave me the bravery to find my happiness and strength once again. A peace settled in my soul and I found our daily adventures to be a healing process that started to repair me inside and out.
The nickname Goldilocks and the Wolf was given to us by my Mother. With my long blonde hair and Kyro’s Agouti coloring – the name just stuck. It became my Instagram name and the name of my photography business. Through the lens of my camera I tried to capture the ‘Fairy-tale’ moments we were seeing in our journeys together. Fairy-tales certainly are better when you have a Knight in shining armor. Or, in my case, a blue-eyed hero covered in fur. Together we have learned to stop and enjoy even the most simple of moments. And we both certainly appreciate the moments that absolutely take your breath away. I have caught Kyro so many times just sitting and watching the world around him. With Kyro by my side I’ve learned to brave and try things I would have never considered before. For example, waking up at 3AM to hike a mountain just to watch the sun crest over the mountains.

The Beauty Of Our Adopted Dog
It’s been more than ten years since we adopted a crossbreed dog from a dog shelter. He was about five years old then, we don’t know the exact date of birth. He got there because after spending years with his first family, he became unwanted. And then, when he found a new home somewhere else, only after two month he became unwanted again and the shelter workers found him wandering around. The second family did not want him back. But then we saw him, and we knew he was the one.
As almost every adult unwanted dog from the shelter, he’s got a few behavioral issues. It’s not his fault, it’s the fault of his first family. We know nothing about them, and I don’t think he was mistreated in some way. But it was very visible, that they were not walking him. They didn’t socialize him with other dogs and he didn’t know even the basic things, like how to sit on command or play with some toy.
The result is that he is aggressive towards other dogs and he is always trying to run away. It took me five years to teach him how to safely go for walk without a leash without him running away. Unfortunately, I was unable to solve his aggressiveness to other dogs. It’s much better than at beginning, but still not okay.

We Traveled To Africa Where We Ended Up Having A Traditional Wedding In A Remote Place
Hi – it’s Mario and Steffi. Last spring we planned a trip to Lalibela, Ethiopia, East Africa, to explore the orthodox Easter ceremony in one of the holiest places on Earth. Lalibela is located in the center of Ethiopia along a cliff. The ceremonies are very spiritual; we took the chance and spend hours in the holy rock churches. And after the days passed by we felt we have to climb the plateau and keep on travelling and exploring this amazing country.
We bought some donkeys, food, mattress, stove, honey, petrol and hired local donkey driver name Dessi to take us to a far mountain, the highest around Lalibela, Abune Josef (4.260Hm).
We slept with locals, eat with them, walked about 25 miles a day, started at 5 in the morning and drank water from the river. We spend as much time with nature, with locals, with us. After 4 days we finally climbed one of the highest mountains in Africa, Abue Jofes, and I felt so much freedom and love within me and Steffi, I spontaneously decided to propose marriage to my girlfriend. I just felt it’s the right place, the right time… and guess what – she accepted! By chance I had one piccolo in my photo bag! Cheers!

The Idyllic Beauty Of Tuscany That I Captured During My Trips To Italy
I would like to present some small area in the middle of Italy. It’s Tuscany – the most idyllic and rural place which I’ve visited. I explored this amazing area about 8 years ago. From that moment I have been there many times and will definitely continue visiting it.
Northern Tuscany is densely covered with vineyards and forests, but the southern part is completely different. This region is less overgrown with a lot of fields which cover whole valley and hills.
Durring spring whole area is full of green grass and flowers. While in autumn we found a wide palette of colors . Very popular view are herds of sheep which are moving through the rolling hills. All of them have bells hanged on their necks to make it easier to find them.
We Went To Svaneti And This Is What We Found
Georgia – is a country of stunning beauty, lovely people and fine local food. And Svaneti is it`s most beautiful part. It opened for tourists just a couple of decades ago and now it’s becoming more popular. Caucasus mountain range there is unbelievably gorgeous. There are a lot of hikes in the mountains and a rich historical heritage to learn about, like the Svanetian defence towers from the 10th century, which are 8-9 stories high, or the highest village in Europe – Ushguli.
